1976 Presidential Campaign
In 1976, Reagan challenged incumbent President General Ford in a bid to become the Republican Party’s candidate for president. Reagan soon established himself as the conservative candidate with the support of like-minded organizations such as the American conservative union which became key components of his political base, while President Ford was considered a more moderate Republican.
Reagan’s campaign relied on a strategy crafted by campaign manager Jon Sears of winning a few primaries early to seriously damage the lift-off of Ford’s campaign. Reagan won North Carolina, Texas, and California, but the strategy disintegrated and he ended up losing New Hampshire and Florida. As the party’s convention neared, Ford appeared close to victory. Acknowledging his party’s moderate wing, Reagan chose moderate Republican Senator Richared Schweiker of Pennsylvania as his running mate. Nonetheless, Ford narrowly won with 1,187 delegates to Reagan’s 1,070
Reagan’s concession speech emphasized the dangers of nuclear war and the threat posed by the Soviet Union. Though he lost the nomination, he received 307 write-in votes in New Hampshire, 388 votes as an Independent on Wyoming’s ballot, and a single electoral vote from a Washington State “Faithless elector” in the November election, which Ford lost to Democratic challenger Jimmy Carter.
This article is an important part of my reaserch to learn about all of Reagan’s back round up to the piont when he became president.

Reagannomics
**Reaganomics focused on these points**
Reagan came into office in the 1980’s with many economic issues. Peri or to Reagan there was a 10 year long issue still growing from economic stagnation and inflation, known as stagflation. Under Ford and then Carter they mad the problem worse by creating the Federal oil reserve and the oil glut of the 1980’s. When Reagan took over he stood by his promise of lower taxes and a smaller government. Even though by creating a smaller government and lower taxes increased the fed. deficit, he lowered the oil profit tax witch ended the 1970’s energy crises. Then in 1986 Reagan started a tax reform, the reform cleaned up tax favoritism, cleaned up/broadened tax bases from the old code. By “cleaning up” taxes he eliminated loop holes, preferences, and exceptions, thus raising the effective tax on activities previously specially favored by the code. During Reagan’s time in office he dropped the income tax bracket to 28% in 7 years. While raising social security and medicare taxes. Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth recovered and grew at 3.4% anually during his office time. Unemployment peak at 10.7 in ’82 then decresesed qwickly during the rest of his term. Reagan also managed to significantly decrease inflation.

Regan influenced me in many ways by his life and his conservative polocies. I’ve learned many ways to base my econmic views on because of him.

Military Service of Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan military service was a life long job of President Reagan. April 29, 1937 Reagan in listed into the army reserves as a private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Calvary in Iowa. He was appointed 2nd in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, and on June 18 was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry. Reagan was on active duty for the first time on April 18, 1942. Reagan had nearsightedness, so he was classified for limited service only so he could not go over seas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Manson, California. As a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office. Upon the approval of the AAF, he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the First motion picture base in Culver City. On January 14, 1943 he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to Captain on July 22, 1943. In January 1944, Captain Reagan was ordered to temporary duty in NYC to participate in the opening of the sixth War Loan Drive. He was re-assigned to the 18th AAF Base Unit on November 14, 1944, where he remained until the end of WWII He was recommended for promotion to Major on February 2, 1945, but this recommendation was disapproved on July 17 of that year. He returned to Fort Macarther California, where he was separated from active duty on December 9, 1945. By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the AAF. But his reserve was terminated on April 1,1953. But then in January 1981 he became commander and chief of America!
By his service in the military has influenced many to join the military and help better of our country. It also has influenced my view in what makes a good President. To be a good President and make our country better off you have to experience everything in order to make good choices for our country. What I have learned from this article is that I never knew that Reagan had eye sight problems. This article will give me more background and info about Reagan’s life.

A Remarkable Life Feb. 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004
In this article it talks about President Reagan’s remarkable life. President Reagan was a remarkable person as an actor, Governor, and as a President. Reagan was a famous B – list actor before becoming Governor of California. Then he took his small government conservatism to the major leagues. 1980 He became the President of the United Sates, he returned power to the states which is known as the Reagan Revolution. His tough anti communist view was credited for helping destroy the USSR. Reagan was “The Great Communicator,” for his remarkable charm and ability to captivate every one when he spoke. Regan’s Presidency was a very heroic, less than 3 months into his first term he was seriously wounded by a gun shot/ attempted assassination. Reagan was also famous for his wit, when he was shot he told his wife that he forgot to duck. Also in the operating room he said to the doctors I hope all of you are Republicans! Reagan never did fully recover from his injury, over the years Reagan started a slow mental and physical decline. President Ronald Reagan died June 5th, 2004.
This article fit into my research project because it helps me to get an over view of his life and what I will need to research about. I learned in this article that Reagan’s health problems were from his assassination attempt.
